Becoming a Volunteer Mentor



Volunteers can be any age. They must be caring, mature, responsible, open-minded, reliable and committed. It is important that they have an understanding of the joy and trials of parenting, obtained through life experiences, employment and/or volunteer activity. Volunteers apply and are then screened, orientated, trained, supported and recognized.







 

 

Position Description (Volunteer Mentor)

 

Duties and Responsibilities


- To participate in a one-on-one relationship with a parent as a role model, friend, supporter and companion

- To model parenting and child management skills

 - Support access to other services

- To openly communicate with all involved

- To assist with practcal needs

 

- To maintain confidentiality

Time Requirements:



- Regular contact by phone

 - 3 to 4 in-person visits per month
 


- One year commitment



Skills and Qualifications:

-Experience with children

- An understanding of adolescence

-Mature, responsible, open-minded, reliable and committed

-Effective interpersonal and communications skills.


Orientation and Training:

 

 

-Both are provided prior to being paired with young parent

-Volunteer manual (includes resource material)

-In-services with others in the program

 



Supervision:





 -Regular phone and in-person contact with Coordinator

-Review every three months and post-program evaluation

-Support and feedback are always available
