Parents

Parents

Parents in the program are often experiencing some of the following life circumstances:

Pregnancy

Parenting newborn to 5 year olds

Without adequate family/spousal support

Want the assistance of a volunteer mentor

Economically disadvantaged

Low education level or education opportunities

Geographically isolated

Unstable family environment

Parenting alone

Have a disability (mental,cognitive,psychiatric,phyisical)

Past (not current) history of substance abuse or domestic abuse

A parent is ineligible if she/he requires ongoing, intensive, professional services, to such an extent that volunteer services would be ineffective to inappropriate for that individual.

What You Can Expect from a Volunteer:

A PMPS Volunteer is a friend, supporter, role model, companion, and mentor. They are  someone who will listen, spend time, respect, and share information, suggestions and resources. They will assist you in increasing your skills and knowledge as a parent and as an individual. They will "be there" for you when they can.  They will keep what you discuss or say in confidence. They do have an obligation to break this confidence if the information you provide will cause harm to you or someone else. You can invite them to participate in appointments, activities and special events in your life. They will provide you with the practical assistance and support of an experienced parent. There is no cost to you. The mentors are non-judgmental, caring and concerned volunteers.
